As the weather cools and school ramps back up, it's time to update wardrobes with warmer options to make it easy to layer and get out the door in the morning. Discover the key pieces to add to your child's wardrobe this fall.

Here at AJ+Bear, we're big fans of the capsule wardrobe. The goal is to buy a few key pieces that can be easily mixed and matched for the greatest variety of outfits with the fewest clothing pieces possible. With the changes in the weather, one of the best things you can do for your child's wardrobe is make sure they have plenty of layering pieces like coats and sweaters that they can take off if the day gets too warm.

Fall capsule basics:

  1. A good pair of jeans (maybe two)

  2. T-shirts in 3 or 4 different colors

  3. Long-sleeve t-shirts for cooler days

  4. A pullover sweatshirt or zip-up hoodie for layering

  5. A pair of boots or sneakers

  6. Socks (these Hane's ankle socks are some of our favorite)

  7. A corduroy jacket, jean jacket, or a vest for cooler days

  8. A sweatsuit

Other pieces to add:

You might also consider adding the below for events, church, or other occasions where "nicer" attire is expected.

For boys:

  1. Add a pair of khaki, gray, or black pants for events

  2. Add a button-down shirt

For girls:

  1. Add a dress, skirt, or a pair of khaki, gray, or black pants

  2. Add a blouse or button-down shirt

What else to consider:

With all of that in mind, you'll probably also notice fall is a great time to introduce different textures and the more earthy, warm colors like reds and browns (match the changing leaves!!). Cable knit sweaters are excellent for colder days, while waffle knit long-sleeves are a great layering staple. Let your kids experiment with matching different fabric types and patterns, and don't be afraid to accessorize as needed with scarves or longer socks.

We hope this quick overview was helpful! Check out the infographic below for some of the main things to look for as you're updating your child's wardrobe this year.
